Janel Swain

Janel is an Advanced Care Paramedic and the Manager of Clinical Services with Emergency Health Service (EHS) Nova Scotia. Prior to this, she worked as a Clinical Development Paramedic then as the Ground Services Clinical Supervisor. Prior to her work with EHS, she completed an Honors Degree in Advanced Biology at Dalhousie University, a Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa and worked with the National Canadian Red Cross office as part of the Injury Prevention Department. While in Ottawa she completed both her Primary and Advanced Care Paramedic studies at Algonquin College. Upon return to Nova Scotia she began working with EHS, became a Heart and Stroke ACLS and PALS Instructor and subsequently obtained her Certificate in Adult Education from St. Francis Xavier University. Janel has fostered innovative methods and content of professional development for paramedics, while providing leadership for the clinical educators within the EHS ground ambulance system. Her efforts were recognized in 2019 as she was the national recipient of the Paramedic Association of Canada Award of Excellence in Education and Training. Janel is a co-investigator on several EMS research studies focusing on clinical care and EMS system design. She also serves as a Senior Appraiser with the Prehospital Evidence-Based Practice Program with the Dalhousie University Division of EMS, Department of Emergency Medicine. Her international contributions to education and research include being an Evidence Reviewer, Question Owner and Task
Force Member for the First Aid Task Force with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). She also acted as a coach for the Healthcare Excellence Canada Paramedics Providing Palliative Care at Home Collaborative and is a current ACP Lead for the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) Examination Maintenance Committee.
